How to choose a psychologistSome people already know an individual who is seeing a psychologist in Ottawa and are being helped, and will sometimes contact that psychologist by way of referral.
Oftentimes a family doctor or a nurse will make a referral, or a recommendation could come from a teacher or a pastor or priest. Some simply look online. You may want to see if they are a member of Ottawa Academy of Psychology at ottawa-psychologists.org. This just tells you that they are a local member of the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO). |
How will I know this is the right psychologist for me?No matter how you find a psychologist, the question is he/or she the right one for you? In addition to verifying your psychologist is a registered practitioner, you are going to want to choose one with whom you feel comfortable.
Unless there is good rapport and the foundation for a good working relationship to develop, the outcome will not be as good as it could be and can actually actually prevent a person from seeking help in the future. |
If upon your first attempt to find a psychologist you are disappointed, you need to consider the fact that this is really no reflection on you or for that matter the psychologist. It’s just a chemistry thing and has little to do with anything else.
Go with your ‘gut’, trust your feelings. Ask yourself: Does this person seem kind, understanding and non-judgmental? Do you feel listened to and uniquely appreciated? If not, perhaps you need to try someone else who might be a better fit.
There are many psychologists in the Ottawa area who can help you sort things out and move forward in your life.
