Payment for services
Why should I pay to see a psychologist? In fact, the services provided by psychologists can be seen simply as an important part of total health care.
Psychologists see people who have a wide range of problems. Some people consult psychologists when they simply have an important decision to make and need an objective and private sounding board. Some will consult to help them manage a chronic illness. People suffer from diagnosable psychological disorders such as anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress reaction. Some people experience difficulties when they go through transitions such as marriage breakdown, workplace problems/job loss, retirement, parenthood, accidents, serious illness, bereavement and others. Psychologists are trained to recognize the physical bases of psychological disorders when this occurs. They work within their scope of practice to provide quality health care. Psychologists will ensure that the client/patient seeks medical attention when it is appropriate and also will refer to other social services when they are important to the resolution of the problem. |
Are psychological services covered by OHIP?No. Services provided by a psychologist in private practice are not covered by OHIP. However, fees are reimbursed by private extended health care insurance provided as a benefit by your employer.
We work on a fee-for-service basis, and people typically pay as they go, at the end of each session, receiving a receipt suitable for submission to their insurance company. A personal cheque, cash or Interac transfer (online banking) is usually the accepted norm. The part of the fee not reimbursed by your insurance company is claimable as a medical expense on income tax. You will find that, when you pay for your therapy after each session, your therapy becomes a budgeted expense valued for its positive impact in your life. What are your fees? Please speak with your psychologist.
How long will I have to see you? Please speak with your psychologist.
